20 Hot Ways To Keep Cool In A Summer Heat Wave
About This Project
This listicle is the latest iteration of several older editorial pieces that were used to promote an assortment of relevant products during hot summer months on Lowes.ca. This evergreen content would be promoted from email and social media campaigns in addition to our summer landing page.
Creative Process
As per usual process, I would consult with our online category manager to identify which products we would want to promote for our summer campaign. I would perform SEO keyword research in order to target specific terms and order them from highest to lowest search volume. I didn’t have to go as far as 20 items, but I was feeling ambitious. I also took special care to incorporate A LOT of puns and wordplay to make this fun and engaging to read. There was also quite a bit of image research to ensure each listicle actually included a product that we sold.

Hot and bothered in the summer heat? We've got 20 refreshing ideas to help you keep your cool and beat the heat this summer.
1. Try a new air conditioner
No AC at home? Start with the simplest solution.
Explore air conditioners with innovative features, like having a fan, dehumidifier and air conditioning all in one!2. Get outdoors and fire up your BBQ
Leave the searing heat to your grill. Chill out on your deck or patio — and outside the kitchen. Appliances like your oven or stove give off heat and raise temps indoors.
3. Treat yourself to more smoothies
Live the sweet life! From afternoon snacks to morning shakes, a blender or juicer offers icy relief when you need it.
4. Grab some shelter under a gazebo
Lots of lawn and no shade? A gorgeous gazebo transforms your backyard into a breezy outdoor living space.
5. Get just enough sun under a pergola
Hide from the heat without losing rays. Add a pergola above your deck or patio with easy-to-control canopies and covers, perfect for any setting.
6. Invest in trees
Branch out! Start planting today for natural leafy shade tomorrow. Harvest apples and pears, or admire foliage outside your window. A well-placed tree will keep out sun exposure so you stay cooler indoors. Visit a Lowe’s Garden Centre near you to view our full selection.
7. Hang curtains and drapes
Don't hesitate; insulate! Light filtering or insulated curtains and drapes help to block the sun and sweltering heat.
8. Stay dry and dehumidify
Stressed over a sticky, humid summer? Dehumidifiers pull out excess moisture from the air so you don't have to break a sweat.
9. Save energy with smart thermostats
Keep your cool during a heat wave. When temperatures fluctuate, smart thermostats are automated to help you stay in your comfort zone.
10. Give your ceiling fan a spin
Turn, turn, turn. Adjust the direction of your ceiling fan as the seasons change. Rotate counterclockwise to pull up hot summer air and enjoy a satisfying breeze!
11. Break out the beverages
Cheers! Stock up your outdoor kitchen with a temperature-controlled mini fridge or wine cooler. Quench your thirst with your favourite drinks, deliciously chilled to perfection.
12. Install more outdoor sun protection
Looking for more cover? Escape scorching summer days by adding awnings over your patio, deck, or doorways. Close exterior shutters to block the heat from your windows.
13. Prop up patio umbrellas 24/7
Don’t wait for a rainy day! Patio umbrellas are must-haves for sunny wining and dining. Keep the conversation going after dark, under the glow of solar-powered LED lights.
14. Treat your windows
Dress to impress! Add blinds and shades to accentuate your room, insulate hot and cold, and filter light.
15. Upgrade your light fixtures
Here’s a bright idea: Prevent heat build-up by installing energy-efficient lighting! Low-heat CFL or LED bulbs are best.
16. Turn on the waterworks
Go wild! Fight sizzling heat with a splash. Thrill the kids, set the sprinkler to full blast, and soak in the nostalgia. If you head to the pool, don’t forget fun accessories to stay afloat.
17. Make your own masterpiece
Picturesque or practical. Why not both? Create a beautiful display with window film that also keeps it cool indoors.
18. Put hot air to good use
Reach for the sky! Pounce on inflatables and bouncers that boost summer activities with oversized fun.
19. Think outside the icebox
Ready to melt? Stock your freezer for cold comfort to survive hot summer nights. Before tucking in, stick bed sheets inside a bag and let them sit for five minutes or less.
20. Wind down and relax
It’s easy breezy. Trust portable fans to blow off mosquitoes so you can focus on more lounging, less swatting. Don’t oscillate over this hot weather essential.
Getting through the summer beyond air conditioning is surprisingly easier than you think. While there’s nothing better than the real thing, now you know dozens of ways to keep your cool. Enjoy!
